From the Principal

April, 2018

Greetings! Hard to believe, but spring has finally arrived! I know the students (and teachersJ) are really enjoying regular outside recess and warmer temps. This is also the time of year when we start to get very busy! Here are some important items this month:

Spring NWEA and MSTEP Testing
Beginning on Monday, April 9th we will start our spring round of testing. For NWEA testing Kindergarten and 1st Grade will be assessed on reading and math. Second grade students are assessed on reading, math, and language arts. 3rd-7th grade students are assessed on reading, math, language arts, and science. For MSTEP, 3rd, 4th, 6th, and 7th grade is assessed on math and language arts. 5th grade will be assessed on math, language arts, science and social studies.  As you can see this is A LOT of testing. We are doing our best to space out the tests to prevent fatigue. For a specific testing schedule for your child’s grade/classroom, please check with the teacher.

PTO Meeting
The next PTO meeting is on April 17th at 6pm in the lower el library. We will be discussing field day and officer elections. Join us if you can!

Open House
Our next open house is scheduled for 4/19, from 5-6pm. We are enrolling all grades K-8 for Fall 2018!

4th & 5th Grade Advanced Music
This semester many of our 4th and 5th graders have participated in an advanced music class taught by WMU students. These lessons will culminate in a performance on 4/20 at Dalton Recital Hall on WMU’s campus. Performing students and their parents should arrive no later than 5:30pm. All students and OA families are invited to attend this free performance!

Science Fair
Our annual, non-competitive, science fair will be held on April 24, from 4:30-6:00pm. Student projects will be displayed in both buildings and the book fair will be open in the lower el. Students can arrive starting at 4:15pm, please do not arrive before this time as teachers are in a meeting. Students should set up their project/display in their classroom. We look forward to seeing all the great projects from our students!

As always, if you have questions or concerns, please contact me here at school. My email is sboris@fbrcs.org. Happy spring!

Sincerely,
Mrs. Boris, Principal, Oakland Academy
