From the Principal

September, 2017

Dear Families,
Welcome Back! We are looking forward to another exciting year of learning and growing here at Oakland Academy.

DAILY SCHEDULE:  Doors open at 8:00 am.  Students enter the classroom at 8:15 am with instruction beginning at 8:20 am.  We will dismiss at 3:30 pm.  Our lunch/recess block is from 12-1 pm.

DROP-OFF AND PICK-UP PROCEDURES:  To help us make this school year a safe and fun one, it is important that we all understand the expectations of the Academy.  For example, we start our day at 8:00 am.  That means that children will not be permitted in the school buildings prior to 8:00 am. Please DO NOT drop off unattended students before 8am!  If you need to drop your children off prior to that time, you need to make arrangements either with a friend, a daycare center or sign up for our before school care program.  Dismissal is at 3:30 pm.  After school care is available at CDC if needed. Reminder: K and 1st are picked up at lower el, 2nd-7th are picked up at upper el. If you have more than one child, they will always wait with the youngest. So if you have a 1st and 4th grader, they will be waiting at lower el with first grade for dismissal.

During dismissal please keep as close as possible to the car in front of you to maximize space. Also, please utilize two lanes of traffic at both buildings under the awnings as this helps reduce unnecessary backups! And please have patience the first week as we work out the kinks

EARLY DISMISSAL PROCEDURES:
Students who need to leave early will need to provide the office the date, time and reason for early dismissal as well as the name and number of the person picking up to contact if necessary. Parents may contact the office before 2:00 p.m, letting office personnel know the above information.  This will provide the office an opportunity to have your child ready to be picked up and minimize classroom interruptions.

Please understand students expected to remain in school the full instructional day (8:20-3:30 p.m.).  We understand appointments come up and students may need to leave early.  Our goal is to ensure our students are given all opportunities to learn and maximize instruction with minimal classroom interruptions.

We request that parents who arrive after 2:45 wait until our 3:30 dismissal to pick up their students.  The office is very busy at this time and students are sometimes moving in the hallways.  This will ensure the safety of all students by eliminating the risk of unknown adults in the building at that time.  This will also help prevent traffic backups during dismissal.

UNIFORM POLICY:  Students are expected to arrive on time and in uniform.  Uniform violation letters will be sent home if a student is not in uniform.  Parents may be contacted to pick up their child or bring their child a change of clothes.  All students are to be dressed neatly according to the following guidelines:

  • Navy blue pants, skirts, or walking shorts (not sweatpants or blue jeans)
  • White shirts with collars, bearing no insignias other than the Academy logo (no crew neck T-shirts)
  • Shirts worn underneath a white collared shirt MUST be white bearing no insignias.
  • Navy or gray sweaters (no sweatshirts)
  • Navy, gray or white socks or tights
  • No open-toed shoes, crocs, heels or shoes with wheels.

CLASSROOM ASSIGNMENTS AND SUPPLY LISTS:
Please keep in mind that due to potential changes in enrollment and/or staffing during the first several weeks of school, all placements are considered temporary.  While every effort is made to avoid changes after the first day of school, it is occasionally necessary to make some changes to class lists.  Parents will always be notified it that is to occur.  Every effort is made to do what is in the best interest of our students.  Supply lists can be found on our website and are consistent for each grade level.

Special Events: This year we are looking forward to many special events! We are planning on a carnival, trunk or treat, musical, literacy night, science fair, and several others. First up will be our walk a thon on 9/29. More details will come home very soon!

The Oakland Academy team has high expectations for our students.  Each child is expected to be a responsible and respectful student.  They will strive daily to demonstrate their personal best when students to take ownership in the learning process.  Together we will help our students develop and grow socially and academically.

Welcome to the Oakland Academy Family.

Sincerely,
Mrs. Shawn Boris
