Welcome to 4th Grade!
Hello! I am looking forward to a very exciting year! If you need to contact me, please feel free to call from 7:30am-4:00pm at 324-8951.  If I am not available please leave a message with one of the office coordinators or at extension #14.  I am looking forward to a great year in fourth grade!

A little information about Miss Ciavattone…
I thought that I would share a little more information with you about myself. I have been around children for the greater portion of my life and have always enjoyed working with them. I graduated from Grand Valley State University in December 2009. After graduating, I worked as a sub, a nanny, and worked other places while applying and waiting for a teaching opportunity. That opportunity finally came when I started at Oakland Academy as an associate teacher in August 2012. I have continued to teach at Oakland Academy as a managing teacher since then. As I head into my sixth year of teaching at Oakland Academy, I have spent four years teaching first grade and this will be my second year teaching fourth grade.  I am very excited to work with your students!

School – Wide Procedures:
School starts every day at 8:20 am; we will enter the room at 8:15.  Students are not allowed in the building until 8 am.  The driveway can become very busy during this time, so if you need to talk to a teacher or the principal, please park in a parking space and then come into the building.  The students should wait in the fourth grade line which is located under our classroom bulletin board. School dismisses each day at 3:30 pm.  To help the traffic flow, please wait in your car and a teacher will bring your child to the car. We ask that you please continue to pull forward with the flow of traffic before and after school. Our goal is to keep traffic moving and keep everyone safe.

Classroom Expectations:  I have high expectations for our students and hope they have high expectations for me as their teacher.
Students are expected to:

  • Arrive to school on time, prepared, and ready to learn
  • Demonstrate respect to their peers, teachers, and property of others
  • Use proper table manners and conversations at breakfast/lunch
  • Always do their personal best

Classroom Management:
At Oakland Academy all classrooms use a card system to manage behavior.  Students will begin the day on a green card.  The goal for each student is to stay on green throughout the whole day.

Green: Student is on task and follows directions

Yellow: Warning – Student will miss out on 15 minutes of recess.

Red: Student will miss out on all of recess and most likely result in a note or phone call home, depending on the situation.

Card Change Note:
Each time a student receives a card change a note will be sent home explaining the behavior(s) that led to the card change(s). Parents are asked to discuss the situation with the student then sign and return the note to school the following day.

Homework will be assigned when I feel the homework will enrich what your students are learning that week. I want to make sure that students are receiving quality homework and not just receiving homework just to have it. It is important that your student is in charge of managing their homework. It is your student’s responsibility to turn homework assignments in on the days they are due as soon as they get into the classroom in the morning. If the student does not return their work on time, it will result in time owed at recess each day that it is not returned. Thank you for your cooperation!

Spelling Tests:
Spelling tests are given on Fridays of the weeks where we have spelling objectives. Spelling words are sent home at the beginning of the week with your child’s weekly preview of objectives. Our spelling words will increase and become more difficult as the year continues.

Classroom Visits and Volunteers:
Please know that the classroom is always open to you. However, please make every effort to let me know if you plan on visiting during the day. It is very important that an environment is maintained in which the class can learn with as few distractions as possible.
Volunteers are always welcome as well. Throughout the year there will be opportunities for you to help out. Please let me know if you are interested. I will do my best to find a place for you!

I am excited for a great year!
