Starting on October 1st we will begin Book It! This program helps to encourage your child to read at home. This additional reading will help them build comprehension skills and confidence as well. We would like to have students read for twenty minutes at least five days a week. Each student will be receiving a calendar for each month that will help them keep track of the times they read or are read to. If your child reads or is read to for twenty minutes just color in the day on the calendar and then turn it in at the end of the month. At the end of each month send in your child’s calendar and they will receive a coupon for a free personal pan pizza from Pizza Hut.
Fall Harvest Celebration
Our classroom will be having a Fall Harvest Celebration on Thursday, November 1st. If they have little pieces or accessories it would be best if those things stay at home so they will not get lost. Scary costumes and masks are NOT allowed at school. Please remember that proper footwear needs to still be worn. More information will be coming home about our celebration.
Students will have sight words sent home with them each Friday along with their homework folders. They will be given five words each week to work on. The sight words that we are working on are high frequency words that students will see in their books and daily work. They will have a spelling test over these words the Friday after they are sent home. Throughout the year students will be working to master objectives based on how many sight words they know. The goal at the end of the year is that they are able to read 50 of the sight words from the list. It is very important to spend some time each night working on the words with your child so that they can start to gain confidence and independence in their reading. Thank you in advance for your support and help with this.
Students will be receiving a homework packet at the beginning of each month, with homework to be completed and returned to school weekly. These should be turned in by Friday of each week. As the year progresses these packets will become more challenging to fit your child’s needs. At this point we are just trying to get our students used to having homework and sight words to practice.
Look for more information to be coming home about the fall carnival. There will be games to play and prizes to win. Wristbands will be sold for this event at the door. We look forward to seeing you there.
