3rd Grade – Lemley

December Newsletter

It was great seeing all of our parents at conferences in November. We are setting our goals for the remainder of the year based on the data we have collected so far this year. We are also starting a new program school wide in reading. These groups will begin November 30th meeting Monday through Thursday from 8:20-9:00 a.m. So please make sure your child is on time and ready to start their reading group.

With the onset of cold weather we would like to remind you of our recess policy. We will go outside every day the temperature is 10 degrees or higher. Your student will be expected to come with a coat, snow pants, boots, hats and gloves ready to enjoy our great Michigan winter. If you need any items to help stay warm please just let us know, we have extra supplies to help out those in need. Students will not be allowed to remain indoors unless we have a written note to excuse them from outside play.

In math we will continue our study of multiplication. Please work with your student at home if they have yet to learn their basic facts. We will be starting multi-digit multiplication soon so knowing the facts will help prevent frustration with the harder problems.

Science this month will begin the study of our solar system. This is always a favorite for the students and we will be doing several projects in connection with this theme.

In social studies we will be starting the study of how the government of Michigan works. We will study the Constitution, responsibilities of citizens, and how laws are made and carried out. We will conclude this unit with a trip to Lansing and a visit to our Capital Building.

We will also be writing many papers this coming year. We will write narratives, research reports, and an informational report. We will also be completing many daily assignments developed to help us become even better readers and writers. Arbor Academy is also holding their first writing competition. This is a school wide contest with winners receiving great prizes. Please check you principal’s newsletter for more information on this competition. Writing samples will be judged on December 14th.

We want to wish everyone a great winter break. Get outside and enjoy the beautiful, hopefully white, vacation. See you back in school on January 4th 2016!
